Remembering Summer Shawl: Yarn & Color Recommendations

The Remembering Summer Shawl is designed as a cozy fall or winter accessory that provides the cheer and warmth of summer. To learn more about the Remembering Summer Collection designs, be sure to check out the Behind the Designs: Remembering Summer Collection blog post!

For my sample of this design, I used four colors (three of the colors are used for two different sections), but I've written the pattern for seven (7) 50-gram mini skeins (or less). Interested in some ideas for different color combinations for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 7 colors? Be sure to keep reading, as there is a list below of a variety of color combination ideas!

The yarn that I used for my sample of this shawl is Schachenmayr Baby Smiles Bravo Baby. Unfortunately, this yarn is now sold out. Fortunately, there are lots of other wonderful yarns that you can substitute! I'll share multiple color ideas for each of the yarns that I suggest, and I invite you to also play around with combinations that you love!

Here are a few different color combination recommendations:

  1. Use one color for the entire scarf (250 grams).

  2. Use two colors: one for color 1 (my gray) and one for colors 2-7. This would require 50 grams of color 1 and 200 grams of the second color.

  3. Use three colors: one for color 1 (my gray), one for colors 2-4 (my dark orange, green, and blue), and one for colors 5-7 (my light orange, dark turquoise, and purple). This would require 50 grams for color 1, 80 grams of the second color, and 120 grams of the third color.

  4. Use three colors, but rotate through the colors so they are dispersed through the scarf: one for color 1 (my gray), one for colors 2, 4, & 6 (my dark orange, blue, and dark turquoise), and one for colors 3, 5, & 7 (my green, light orange, and purple). This would require 50 grams for color 1, 80 grams of the second color, and 120 grams of the third color.

  5. Use four colors: one for color 1 (my gray), one for colors 2 & 3 (my dark orange and green), one for colors 4 & 5 (my blue and light orange), and one for colors 6 & 7 (my dark turquoise and purple). This would require 50 grams of color 1, 60 grams of the second color, 50 grams of the third color, and 90 grams of the fourth color.

  6. Use four colors, but rotate through the colors so they are dispersed through the scarf: one for color 1 (my gray), one for colors 2 & 5 (my dark orange and light orange), one for colors 3 & 6 (my green and dark turquoise), and one for colors 4 & 7 (my blue and purple). This would require 50 grams of color 1, 50 grams of the second color, 80 grams of the third color, and 70 grams of the fourth color. (This is the color option that I used in my sample.)

  7. Use seven different colors. This is an especially fun way to work with a fade, gradient, or sequence of colors (such as a rainbow). This requires 50 grams for color 1, 20 grams for color 2, 40 grams of color 3, 20 grams of color 4, 30 grams of color 5, 40 grams of color 6, and 50 grams of color 7.

Yarn & Color Recommendations

I've organized these yarn recommendations from cheapest to most expensive. Note: This pattern only calls for 250 grams of yarn, which is just 2.5 skeins of yarn. Depending on what size of skeins you use and what color combination you choose, you may have quite a bit of extra yarn left over (especially if you create a 7-color shawl using 100-gram skeins of yarn).

Note: I am not affiliated with any of the yarns that I suggest; I am only providing a reference of suggestions for the knitters who wish to knit my pattern. All photos are from the websites I have linked in this post.
