HUSTLE AND BUSTLE HAT
 
The Hustle and Bustle Hat is one of four knitting patterns in the “A New Home” Collection, a collection of fingering weight patterns inspired by my new home: North Carolina.

ABOUT THE PATTERN

Fun, simple, and the perfect pattern for your “busy” hand dyed yarns. Hustle and Bustle is inspired by the “random chaos” of the city, of people running to and fro. It features a fun, “random” (but repeated) purled texture. The purls create diagonal lines dashing in different directions that add interest to your simple knit but allow the yarn to be the true star of the knit.
 
Love fun, busy (speckled or variegated) hand dyed yarns but hate knitting in plain stockinette? This hat pattern is for you!
 
This pattern is worked bottom up and includes instructions for lengthening the hat if you prefer a slouchier style. The gauge used for the hat is relatively loose, making for a lightweight fabric ideal for transitional weather.
 
The pattern includes one PDF with both the written and charted instructions, but the instructions are separated so you can print only what you need.

This pattern is designed to include 9% negative ease (about 2 in / 5 cm). The sample shown in the photos of this pattern is the small adult size.

GAUGE

22 stitches, 28 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm stockinette stitch with larger needle size
 
TOOLS
 
3.75 mm (US size 5), or one size smaller than size needed to obtain gauge, circular needles, minimum 16 in / 40 cm long
4.0 mm (US size 6), or size needed to obtain gauge, circular needles, minimum 16 in / 40 cm long; double pointed needles optional for decreases
Darning needle
8 removable stitch markers, optional
 
TECHNIQUES
 
The techniques used in this pattern are simplistic: knits and purls in the round with just one type of decrease. This is a perfect project for a beginner knitter who is confident with working flat and is interested in learning how to work in the round, and specifically how to knit a hat.
